ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Mutual exclusivity

Okay, so imagine you have a big bag of toys. You want to share your toys with your friends, but you don't want them to fight over the same toy. So, you decide to keep some toys for yourself and give some toys to your friends.

Mutual exclusivity is like that. It means that when you have two things, they can't happen at the same time. For example, you can't be both happy and sad at the same time. You have to choose one.

In other words, if two things are mutually exclusive, only one of them can be true or happen. Just like you can only play with one toy at a time. You can only have one emotion at a time.

So, when you hear people say that two things are mutually exclusive, it means they can't both be true or happen at the same time. They are like two toys in a bag - you can only play with one of them at a time.
