ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Native American name controversy

So, a long time ago there were lots of people who lived in America who were called Native Americans. They had their own languages, cultures, and ways of doing things.

But, when people from other places came to America, they started calling the Native Americans different names that made them feel bad. Some of these names were really mean, like "redskin," which is like calling someone a mean word for the color of their skin.

Now, many people think that these names should not be used anymore because they are hurtful and disrespectful. Some people disagree and think that it's okay to keep using them because they've been used for a long time.

It's important to be kind and respectful to all people, no matter what their background or culture is. So, we should listen to the Native Americans and hear how they want to be referred to, instead of using names that might be hurtful.
