ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

New Moon

Okay, little one. So, you know how sometimes the moon looks big and round and sometimes it's just a tiny sliver? Well, when we can't see the moon at all, that's called a new moon.

You see, the moon doesn't create its own light like the sun. It reflects the light from the sun instead. So, when the sun is shining on the side of the moon that's facing away from us, we can't see it at all. That's why the night sky looks really dark during a new moon.

Now here's something cool: a new moon happens about once a month. That's because it takes the moon about 29 days to revolve around Earth. So every time it completes one full circle, we get a new moon.

New moons are really important for people who like to stargaze or study astronomy. That's because they make it easier to see stars and planets that might be faint or hard to spot when the moon is really bright in the sky.

So there you have it, kiddo. A new moon is when we can't see the regular moon in the sky because the sun's light isn't shining on it from where we are on Earth.
