New Netherland was an area in North America that was inhabited by Dutch settlers during the 1600s. These settlers (or colonists) travelled across the Atlantic Ocean to a place many people had never heard of or seen before. The colonists hoped to find a place to make money trading goods with other countries. They built homes, planted farms, and had their own government. Eventually the English took control of the colony, but the Dutch influence still remains in this part of the world today.
