ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nomogram

Okay kiddo, so let's talk about something called a nomogram. A nomogram is basically a special kind of chart that helps us figure out things like how much medicine we need to take, or what our ideal weight should be.

Imagine you have a toy car that can go really fast, and you want to know how far it can go in one hour. If you know two things – how fast the car can go, and how long it can run – you can figure out the distance it will cover in one hour.

Well, nomograms work the same way. They combine two or more pieces of information to give us an answer. But instead of doing math or logic problems in our head, nomograms draw a picture that makes it easy to find the answer.

For example, let's say you want to know your ideal weight for your height. You can find a nomogram chart that has lines for height on one side and weight on the other side. You find your height line and follow it across until you reach your weight line. The point where those two lines meet is your ideal weight.

Nomograms are really handy because they make it easy to figure things out quickly, without having to do a lot of calculations. And because they use pictures and graphs, even kids can understand and use them.
