ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Nuclear waste

Okay, buddy, let me explain what is nuclear waste - Nuclear waste is something that's left over after we use nuclear energy to make electricity.

So, imagine you have a toy and you play with it for a really long time. When you're done playing with it, there might be some parts of the toy that you don't need anymore, like the batteries. And just like that, when we use nuclear energy to make electricity, there are some parts of it that are left over that we don't need anymore, and that's nuclear waste.

Now, nuclear waste is actually really dangerous, like touching it or breathing it in can make you sick. That's why we have to be really careful with it, just like we are careful with medicine in our homes, we have to keep nuclear waste safe as well.

Scientists have special places, called nuclear waste dumps, where they keep this waste in containers so it doesn't harm people or the environment. They store this waste underground because that way it's out of everyone's way and it won't cause any harm.

So, just like how you put your toys away in a toy box when you're done playing with them, we put nuclear waste in special containers and store them underground where they won't hurt anyone or anything.
