ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Obstetric ultrasonography

When a baby is growing inside a mommy’s tummy, doctors use a special tool called an obstetric ultrasound machine to take pictures of the baby. It’s like taking a picture of a baby in mommy’s tummy.

The machine uses sound waves to create a picture of the baby. Just like when you shout into an empty room and hear the sound bounce back, the machine sends sound waves into mommy’s tummy and listens for the echo that bounces back.

The sound waves bounce off the baby, and the machine uses that information to create a picture of the baby. This helps the doctors see if the baby is growing properly and if there’s anything wrong with the baby.

Sometimes, the mommy and daddy can even see pictures of the baby and learn if they’re having a boy or a girl! Ultrasound machines are safe and don’t hurt mommy or the baby.
