ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Obverse and reverse

When you have a coin in your hand, there are two sides to it – the front and the back. These sides are called the obverse and the reverse. The obverse is the side of the coin that has the most important picture or design on it. For example, on a penny, the obverse has a picture of Abraham Lincoln. On a quarter, the obverse has a picture of George Washington.

The reverse, on the other hand, is the side of the coin that has a different picture or design. Sometimes it has an important symbol, like the eagle on the back of a quarter. Other times it just has decorations or patterns. Both sides of a coin are very important because they help us know what kind of coin it is and how much it is worth. So, next time you have a coin in your hand, don't forget to check out both the obverse and the reverse!
