Old growth forest

An old growth forest is like a big, magical forest that has been around for a really long time. Think of it like a really old tree that has grown bigger and bigger over many years - an old growth forest is like a whole bunch of those trees that have grown really, really old.

The trees in an old growth forest are usually very tall and have lots of branches, which makes them look really cool and can create a sort of canopy over the forest floor. There are also usually lots of other plants and animals in an old growth forest, like mosses, ferns, birds, squirrels, and even some really big animals like bears or deer.

The thing about an old growth forest is that it takes a really long time (like hundreds or even thousands of years!) for it to become a forest like this. That's because it takes a really long time for the trees to grow nice and big, and for other plants and animals to settle in and make a home there. In fact, an old growth forest might be so old that there are trees there that have been growing for hundreds of years!

Because an old growth forest is so special and important, we want to make sure that we protect it and take care of it so that it can keep being a home for all the plants and animals in it. Some people also like to go to old growth forests just to look at how pretty and amazing they are!
