ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Optic fibre

Hi there, little one! Do you know what a fibre is? It's like a tiny string made of glass or plastic. Now, let's talk about "optic fibre". It's a type of fibre that is used to send information really fast over long distances using light.

Think of it this way - If I want to send you a message, I can use a piece of paper and write it down. Then, I can fold the paper and give it to someone to bring to you. That's one way to send a message. But what if you live very far away, like across the ocean? It would take a very long time for the person carrying the paper to reach you.

Now imagine if I could send you a message using light instead? That's where optic fibre comes in. The fibre is like a tiny tube made of glass or plastic that can carry light. This light can carry information, like a message or a video.

The fibre is so tiny that you can't see it with your eyes, but it's very strong and can handle lots of information. It's kind of like a really long, super-thin and tough strand of spaghetti that travels around the world.

Now, when we want to send a message using optic fibre, we use a special machine that sends a beam of light down the fibre. The light travels really fast - almost as fast as it can go - and carries the information along with it.

That's how we use optic fibre to send information over long distances. It's super cool, isn't it!
