ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Organotroph

Organotroph is just a fancy way of saying that a living thing (like a plant or an animal) gets its food by eating other things.

So, let's say you are an organotroph. That means that you need to eat food like fruits, vegetables, and meat to survive. Your body breaks down the food into simple nutrients like sugars and amino acids. These nutrients are used as energy and building blocks to help make new cells in your body.

Other types of living things, like plants and some bacteria, are not organotrophs. They make their own food through a process called photosynthesis. They use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide to make their own energy-rich molecules like sugars.

In summary, organotrophs are living things that need to eat other things to survive and get the nutrients they need to keep growing and functioning properly.
