ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Chemoorganotroph

Okay kiddo, a chemoorganotroph is a type of living thing that gets its energy from eating organic compounds (that's a big word for things that are made up of carbon, like plants and animals) and breaking them down with chemicals.

Imagine that you have a cookie in front of you. Now, if you were a chemoorganotroph, you would take a bite of the cookie and your body would use chemicals to break it down into smaller pieces that it can use for energy.

Animals, including humans, are chemoorganotrophs because we eat plants and other animals to get our energy. Some bacteria and fungi are also chemoorganotrophs. They break down dead plants and animals in the soil and use them for energy.

So, think of a chemoorganotroph like a little machine that takes in food and turns it into energy using chemicals. Just like how you need to eat your veggies to have energy to play, chemoorganotrophs need to eat too!
