ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Particle accelerator

A particle accelerator is a machine that speeds up and shoots particles, like protons or electrons, really really fast. You can think of it like a really big, powerful slingshot. A particle accelerator shoots particles inside a big underground tube. It then uses electricity and magnets to make the particles go faster and faster until they reach almost the speed of light. Scientists use particle accelerators to distance study tiny particles that make up matter and discover more about how the universe works.
