ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Paryushan

Paryushan is a special time for Jains, where they celebrate and reflect on their values and beliefs. Imagine that you are on a vacation where you take a break from school or work to focus on something important. That's what Paryushan is like for Jains.

During Paryushan, Jains fast and try to purify their soul. Think of it like when you take a bath to make your body clean, Jains do things to make their spirit clean. They let go of negative emotions like anger and envy and try to practice forgiveness and love towards others.

Jains also listen to stories and read sacred texts to learn more about their religion. They go to the temple more often to pray and offer thanks for all the good things in their life.

Paryushan lasts for eight days, and the last day is called Samvatsari. On this day, they ask for forgiveness from everyone they have hurt or wronged in the past year, even animals and plants. They also forgive those who have wronged them because they believe that forgiveness is essential to live a happy life.

To summarize, Paryushan is like a special break where Jains focus on making their soul clean and pure, learn more about their religion, and practice love and forgiveness towards others.
