ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Perfect fourth

A perfect fourth is a special way of measuring how far apart two musical notes are from each other. Imagine you have a toy piano and you play a note. Now, if you want to play a note that is higher or lower than the first note, you can count how many "steps" there are between the two notes.

A perfect fourth is when the second note you play is four steps higher than the first note. For example, if you play the note "C" on your toy piano, a perfect fourth above "C" would be "F" (if you count four steps up from "C", you get "C, D, E, F").

A perfect fourth is called "perfect" because it sounds really nice when you play two notes that are a perfect fourth apart. They blend together well and make a pleasing sound. Some songs use a lot of perfect fourths, like the "Star Wars" theme song!
