ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Performative text

Performative text is when words are said out loud and they actually make something happen. It's like magic words! For example, when a judge says "I now pronounce you husband and wife," that's a performative text because it actually makes the couple married. Or when someone says "I promise" during a wedding ceremony, that's also a performative text because they are making a promise and it has real meaning. Basically, it's saying something and it magically makes it happen!
