ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Permanent resident

A permanent resident is someone who is allowed to live and work in a country forever. It's like having a special permission slip that says you can stay in the country as long as you follow the rules.

To become a permanent resident, you have to fill out a bunch of forms and go through a long process of background checks and interviews. The people in charge want to make sure you are a good person and won't cause any problems.

Once you get your permission slip, you can work and go to school just like everybody else. You also have to pay taxes and follow the laws just like citizens do. The biggest difference is that you can't vote or get a passport to travel outside the country.

Being a permanent resident is really important because it means you can make a home in a new country and enjoy all the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
