ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Personal fable

Hi kiddo! Are you ready to learn about something called the "personal fable"?

Have you ever felt like you are the only one who has ever had a certain experience, or that no one else can understand how you feel? That's kind of what the personal fable is. It's when you believe that your thoughts, feelings, and experiences are unique and completely different from anyone else's.

So let's pretend you have a toy that you love and cherish so much. You might feel like no one else could possibly love that toy as much as you do. That's a little bit like the personal fable. You're creating a story in your head that you are the only one who loves that toy so much, even though in reality, there are probably a lot of other kids who feel the same way about their favorite toys.

Or maybe, you've done something embarrassing in front of your friends, and you feel like it will be impossible for you to face them again because they'll never understand how embarrassed you feel. That's also the personal fable. You think you're the only one who's ever been that embarrassed and that no one else could possibly relate to you.

The personal fable is pretty common for kids your age, and even teenagers and some adults experience it too. It's a way of trying to make sense of the world around us and to feel like we are unique and special in some way. But it's important to remember that even though we all have our own thoughts and feelings, we still have a lot in common with other people, and there are probably a lot of people who can relate to us if we are willing to share our feelings with them.
