ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Photosensitivity

Photosensitivity is when your skin or eyes are sensitive to light. This means that they can get injured or damaged when they are exposed to certain types of light. It's like how some people are allergic to certain things like peanuts or bees, but instead of being allergic to a substance, your body reacts to light.

Sometimes, people who are photosensitive can get a rash or a burn on their skin from being in the sun for too long. Other times, they might get a headache, feel dizzy, or see blurry vision if they're exposed to bright lights like flashing lights or neon signs.

One reason why people become photosensitive is because of certain medical conditions, like lupus or epilepsy. In these cases, the immune system or the brain becomes more sensitive to light than normal, causing the body to react.

If you are photosensitive, it's important to protect your skin and eyes from exposure to damaging light. This can mean wearing sunscreen or protective eyewear when you're outside, or avoiding bright, flashing lights that might trigger a reaction. By being careful and taking steps to protect yourself, you can still enjoy fun activities and stay healthy!
