ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Phyletism

Phyletism is when people want to express their cultural identity, and emphasize their own distinct heritage, in a way that goes beyond what is necessary. It is a way of showing pride in your culture, but doing it to the point where you don't consider or value other people's cultures and beliefs. It's a bit like having a favorite sports team: you can root for them, wear their colors, and show your team spirit — but you wouldn't exclude someone who supports another team. Phyletism isn't a bad thing when it is kept in moderation, but it can become a problem when it goes too far.
