ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pilotage

Pilotage means having someone who knows all about driving a big boat or a ship. It's like asking your big brother or sister to help you ride a bike without training wheels for the first time.

Pilots are specially trained people who help ships move through tricky or complicated areas like narrow channels, narrow rivers or ports. They do this so that the ship can go exactly where it needs to go without crashing or running into anything.

Just like how you might need help from someone who knows the way to a new place when you go somewhere for the first time, ships need someone who knows the area and can help them navigate through it.

So, pilots help ships move safely from one place to another. They're like the captains of the ship, but just for a short period of time until the ship goes to the place where it needs to be.
