ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Satellite navigation system

Okay kiddo, so do you know what a map is? It's a piece of paper that shows you different places and how to get there. A satellite navigation system, or SatNav for short, is like a really smart map that you can carry around with you everywhere you go!

So, there are lots of big metal things called satellites that orbit around the Earth really high up in space. These satellites send down signals to the SatNav device in your car or phone, and with the help of some clever technology, they can work out where you are in the world.

The SatNav then uses this information to show you a map on a screen, just like a normal map would. But here's the really cool bit - because the SatNav knows exactly where you are, it can also tell you how to get to wherever you want to go using the fastest or shortest route possible.

So, all you have to do is tell the SatNav where you want to go, and it will give you directions using arrows or a voice that you can listen to. And if you take a wrong turn or miss a junction, the SatNav is clever enough to work out how to get you back on track.

That's pretty much it, little one. With a SatNav, you'll never get lost again and you'll always know how to get to your destination!
