ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ping-pong diplomacy

Okay buddy, have you ever played ping-pong? It’s a game where you hit a little ball back and forth over a table with these little paddles. Well, a really long time ago, in the 1970s, the United States of America and China were not getting along very well. In fact, they didn’t even talk to each other very much.

But one day, a group of American ping-pong players went to China to play some matches. At first, the Chinese government wasn't sure if they wanted to let the Americans come in, but eventually, they were allowed to play. During their trip, the American players talked with the Chinese players and even with some people in power, like the Chinese Premier (which is like the President of the country). This was really important because it was the first time in a long time that Americans and Chinese people were able to talk and work together.

When the American players went back home, they told everyone about their trip and the great things they learned from the Chinese. And the Chinese told everyone about how nice the Americans were. This led to a new relationship between the two countries, one that started with a mutual love of ping-pong sports. This new relationship became known as “ping-pong diplomacy.”

So, just like how we can make friends by playing games with other kids, the United States and China were able to become friends because of a game they both loved: ping-pong! Pretty cool, huh?
