Post-acute withdrawal syndrome

Okay kiddo, so you know how sometimes when we take medicine or do something that changes our body, like drinking alcohol, our body can react in different ways when we stop?

Post-acute withdrawal syndrome, or PAWS for short, is kind of like that. It happens when people who have been using drugs or alcohol for a long time stop using them.

Even though they're not using the drugs or alcohol anymore, their bodies can still feel like they need them. This can make them feel really anxious, tired, or just not like themselves.

It's kind of like when you really want a toy or candy, but you can't have it. You might feel sad or upset because you can't have what you want. That's kind of what people with PAWS feel like - they want the drug or alcohol but they can't have it.

But don't worry kiddo, doctors and other people can help people with PAWS feel better and get through this tough time. It just takes some time and patience for their body to get used to not using those things anymore.
