Back in the olden days, like really olden, people used to drink alcohol. They loved to drink it so much that they started making too much of it and some people got really sick from it. So, some grown-up people decided to make a rule that nobody could make or drink alcohol anymore. This rule was called prohibition. They thought it would make everything better and people would stop getting sick.
However, not everyone liked this idea. Some people still wanted to drink alcohol and they found ways to secretly make and sell it. They did this in hidden places called speakeasies. People would go in secret ways and say secret passwords to get in. It was like a big, fun secret!
Even though it was against the rules, many people still broke the prohibition law, and it caused more problems than it solved. People couldn't get legal alcohol, so some people got really sick from drinking illegal alcohol which made them go blind or even die! Plus, many people lost their jobs and the government lost a lot of money that they could have gotten from taxes on alcohol.
So, after a while, the grown-up people decided that maybe the prohibition rule wasn't such a good idea after all, and they changed the law to allow people to drink alcohol again, but only if they were old enough to do so. Today, we still have rules about drinking alcohol because it can be dangerous if we drink too much of it, but we learn to be responsible and enjoy it safely.
