ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Proprietary colony

Okay kiddo, so have you ever played with your toys and not wanted anybody else to touch them? That's kind of like what a proprietary colony is.

A long time ago, some important people in Europe wanted to start their own colonies in America. They didn't want other people to come in and mess things up or take over. So, they got permission from the king to start their own special colonies called "proprietary colonies."

It was kind of like they were the boss of their own little piece of land in America. They could make their own laws and rules, and they even got to choose who could live there. They were like the owners of the colony.

Of course, they had to follow some rules too. They couldn't do anything too crazy or against the law. But, being in charge of their own colony gave them a lot of power and control.

So, that's what a proprietary colony is - when someone gets to "own" their own piece of land and make their own rules. It's kind of like having your own special toy box that nobody else can touch!
