ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

English colonial empire

Alright, so a long time ago, England (which is a country across the big water from where we are) decided it wanted to have some land and make some money. So it sent people on really long boat rides across the ocean to some other places around the world, like America and India.

Once they got there, the English people started building their own houses, farms and shops. This was called a "colony". They also took land from the people who were already living there, which was not nice at all.

The English people started making things like cloth, tools and furniture and then they sold these things back to their own country, England, for a lot of money. This helped England get really rich!

They also brought slaves from Africa to work on the farms which was very very wrong and not fair at all.

So basically, England had a lot of colonies and they made a lot of money from them, but they had to do a lot of mean things to get it. This is called the English colonial empire.
