The Thirteen Colonies were the colonies that the British Empire had in America before the United States was born. In those colonies, the British had a type of government called the colonial government. That government was in charge of making sure everyone followed laws and did what was expected of them. The colonial government was made up of people who worked for the British Empire in America. This included people called governors, who were in charge of making sure that the people in the colonies followed the rules and stayed safe. The governors also made sure that taxes were collected and that the trade between the colonies and other places was done properly. In addition, the colonial government had judges who ruled on any disputes between people in the colonies. They also made sure that people obeyed the laws of the colonies. Lastly, the colonial government had soldiers to enforce the laws and protect the people of the colonies from harm.
