Colonial History of the United States is the time before it became its own country. Before 1776, the United States was a part of what is called the British Empire. This means that people from Britain came to the land we now call the United States and set up home. They brought their own ideas, technology and language with them, so the United States has a very British feel to it in many places. At first, the colonies were ruled by Britain, but eventually the settlers wanted to make their own laws and become an independent country. This is why in 1776, the United States declared its independence, and thus began its history as a separate country.
