A pulse detonation engine is a type of engine like the ones used in airplanes. Instead of using a single combustion chamber, like a normal engine does, a pulse detonation engine has many small chambers separated by valves. Inside of each chamber is a combination of oxygen and fuel (like gasoline or jet fuel), and when the valves open, oxygen and fuel rush into the chamber quickly – like when you suck air in through a straw or take a big breath. The air and fuel mix together and then the spark plug at the bottom of the chamber lights the mixture, causing a big explosion. The explosion pushes the hot gases out of the chamber and spins a turbine, which is like a big wheel, to generate power.
