ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Pyroelectricity

Pyroelectricity is like when you rub your feet on the carpet and then touch something metal and you feel a little zappy sensation. It happens because rubbing your feet causes your body to build up an electric charge, and when you touch something metal, that charge is released and you feel a shock.

Now, imagine there is a material, like a crystal, that gets a little zappy sensation every time it gets hot or cold. This is because heat and cold can cause the atoms in the material to move around, which creates little electric charges. That means the material can generate electricity whenever the temperature changes, even just a little bit. Pretty cool, right?

Scientists can use pyroelectric materials to make things like sensors that can detect changes in temperature or even cameras that can see heat. So pyroelectricity is like a special superpower that some materials have to create electricity just from changes in temperature.
