Pyrometer

Ok kiddo, have you ever touched something that was really hot and it hurt your hand? Well, a pyrometer is kind of like a magic thermometer that can tell how hot something is without even touching it!

Here's how it works: instead of using mercury or alcohol like a regular thermometer, a pyrometer uses something called infrared radiation. Think of infrared radiation like little invisible rays of light that come off of hot things. The pyrometer can detect how much of this infrared radiation is coming off of the object it's pointed at, and use that information to figure out how hot it is!

Now, you might be wondering how the pyrometer actually detects the infrared radiation. Well, the pyrometer has a special lens, kind of like the lens on a magnifying glass, that focuses the infrared rays onto a sensor inside the pyrometer. The sensor can "see" the infrared rays and turn that into a temperature reading!

Pyrometers are really useful in all sorts of situations where you can't touch something to see how hot it is, like checking the temperature of an oven or a furnace. And because they don't need to touch the object, they're really safe to use too!
