ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Railroad engineer

Okay kiddo, do you know what trains are? Yes? Great! So a railroad engineer is the person who drives the train. They are responsible for making sure the train goes where it’s supposed to go and gets there safely.

To become a railroad engineer, a person needs to go through a lot of training. They need to know how all the different parts of the train work, and how to read signals and signs along the tracks. They also need to be able to communicate with other people on the train, like the conductor and other engineers if there are multiple engines on one train.

Once the engineer is ready to drive, they climb into the engine and start it up. They use levers and pedals, like in a car, to control the speed and direction of the train. It’s like a big video game, but in real life!

But driving a train isn’t just like driving a car. Trains can be very heavy and very long, so the engineer needs to be very careful when stopping and starting the train. They also need to watch out for other trains and people or animals on the tracks.

Overall, being a railroad engineer is a very important and responsible job. It takes a lot of training and hard work, but it’s also very exciting to drive such a big and powerful machine!
