ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Reef knot

A reef knot is a special way to tie two pieces of string or rope together. It's called a reef knot because it's often used by people who go out on boats in the ocean to secure their sails, and reefs are places on the ocean floor where the water is shallow and rocky.

To make a reef knot, you first take one end of the string and tie it in a knot around the other end of the string. Then, you take the end that you just tied the knot around and tie it in a knot around the other end. This creates a secure knot that won't easily come undone.

The important thing to remember about tying a reef knot is that you have to make sure the two knots are tied in opposite directions. If you tie them in the same direction, it's called a granny knot, and it's not as strong or secure as a reef knot.

So, imagine you're tying your shoes. You make the first knot by crossing one lace over the other and then tucking it under the other. That's like the first part of a reef knot. Then, you make the second knot by making a loop with the same lace you just tucked under and then tucking the other lace under and through the loop. That's like the second part of a reef knot.

Congratulations! You just tied a reef knot!
