ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Relaxation oscillator

Have you ever played with a toy that makes a sound over and over again, like a ticking clock or a beeping alarm? That toy has something called a relaxation oscillator inside of it.

A relaxation oscillator is like a little machine that helps things vibrate and make noise. It has two important parts. One part is called a capacitor, which is like a little battery that stores energy. The other part is called a resistor, which is like a little speed bump that slows down the electric current.

When the electric current starts flowing, the capacitor starts storing energy. Once it has enough energy, it sends a burst of energy through the resistor, which makes a noise like a beep or a tick. This burst of energy also helps the capacitor lose its energy and start over again, which makes the noise happen over and over again, like a ticking clock.

Relaxation oscillators are used in lots of things, like toys, clocks, and even some medical equipment. They help those things make noise or vibrate, and they keep going without needing extra help from anything else. So, next time you hear a noise that keeps happening over and over again, remember that it might have a relaxation oscillator inside of it!
