ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Resource recovery

Resource recovery means finding valuable things in waste and turning them into something useful. Just like when we look for treasure, we find gold, diamonds and pearls but in resource recovery, we look for things like plastic, paper, and metals that we can use again. Instead of throwing these things away in the trash, we can recycle or reuse them.

Think about the crayons you used in your kindergarten class, instead of throwing them away, you give them to your teacher. Your teacher melts them down and makes new crayons! Just like that, things like plastic, paper, and metals can be melted or shredded into small pieces and made into new things - like a bottle made of plastic can be melted down and made into fabric for clothes.

Resource recovery helps the Earth stay clean and saves resources because we don't need to make new things from scratch every time. It can also create jobs and help the economy because people can work on collecting, sorting, and processing these materials. So, remember next time you throw something in the trash, think about if it could be reused or recycled.
