ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Right-hand rule

Okay kiddo, the right-hand rule is a special way to remember which direction things are moving around a piece of wire.

Imagine holding your right hand out in front of you with your thumb sticking up. Now imagine a wire going from your thumb to your pinky. If electricity is flowing through the wire from your thumb to your pinky, your fingers will curl around the wire in the direction the electricity is going.

Likewise, if you hold the wire with your thumb and point your fingers in the direction the electricity is going, your palm will face the direction of the magnetic field around the wire.

It sounds tricky, but the right-hand rule is a simple way to remember which way things are moving in a wire. Just remember to make a thumbs-up and go from there!
