ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Robot control

Robot control is like how you tell your toy robot what to do. You have buttons to make your toy robot move or stop. Robots are bigger and more complicated than a toy robot, but they also need to be controlled.

In real life, we use computers to control robots. Just like you tell your toy robot what to do with buttons, we use a computer to tell the robot what to do with a program.

The program is like a set of instructions that tells the robot what to do. The program can have different parts for different things the robots needs to do, like walking, picking up things or dancing.

But how does the robot know what to do when we press a button or when we type the program? That's because of the sensors. Robots have sensors that work like their eyes, ears and hands. The sensors tell the robot what's happening around it so it knows what to do.

For example, a robot that is programmed to pick things up must first see the thing to pick up. It uses its camera sensor to “look” at the object, then it calculates how far it is and where its hand should go. Then it uses the hand sensors to pick it up without crushing the object.

Robot control is basically like telling your toy robot what to do, but using a computer and programs to communicate with a real robot, and the robot uses sensors to see and do things.
