ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Role engulfment

Role engulfment is when your identity is taken over by an important role you have in your life, like in a family or at your job. Imagine that you are the oldest in your family and all your other siblings go to you for help and advice, and you're always the one responsible for fixing problems. That's role engulfment! You can start to feel like you don't have your own life, that all you are is a caretaker for your siblings, and you might forget about your own needs and feelings. This can be stressful and make you feel overwhelmed so it's important to remember it's okay to ask for help, and to make time for yourself to relax and enjoy life!
