Roundup (history)

Roundup is a herbicide, which is a fancy way of saying it’s a chemical that kills weeds. It was first invented in the 1970s by a company called Monsanto. Monsanto made a lot of money selling Roundup because it was really good at killing weeds.

Over time, people started to worry that Roundup might not be safe for people and animals. Some studies showed a possible link between Roundup and cancer. However, Monsanto insisted that Roundup was safe and continued to sell it.

In 2015, a branch of the World Health Organization (WHO) called the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) found that Roundup probably causes cancer. This was a big deal, because the WHO is a trusted organization and its findings can influence laws and regulations all over the world.

Since then, many people have stopped using Roundup and some countries have even banned it. Monsanto has also faced a lot of lawsuits from people who say they got cancer from using Roundup. In 2018, Monsanto was sued by a man who claimed that Roundup caused his cancer, and a jury awarded him $289 million.

Today, Roundup is still being sold in many parts of the world, but its future is uncertain. Some people think it’s too dangerous to use, while others think it’s still a useful tool for farmers and gardeners. The debate over Roundup will likely continue for many years to come.
