Rugby union is a sport where two teams of fifteen players kick or throw a ball around a playing field. During the apartheid era in South Africa, rugby was one of the few sports whites and blacks were able to play together. However, the South African government enforced laws to prevent non-whites from playing in the South African national team. This went against the spirit of the game and made it unfair as it meant that some very talented players were not able to play. This caused other countries to refuse to play games against South Africa, so South African teams were not able to compete in international competitions. The end of apartheid meant these restrictions were lifted, allowing South Africans of all races to join the national team.
