ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Rugged individualism

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard the phrase "it's every man for himself"? Well, rugged individualism is kind of like that.

It means being really independent and self-sufficient. Like if you're playing a game with your friends and they all give up, rugged individualism means you keep playing all by yourself because you don't need anyone else's help.

Some people think it's a really good thing because it means you don't rely on other people to take care of you. They believe that if everyone takes care of themselves, then everyone will be better off.

But other people think it's not such a great thing because it can mean people don't work together to help each other. Sometimes, in big problems, like a natural disaster or a pandemic, people need to work together to solve the problem.

So, while being independent is important, it's also important to work together to solve problems and help each other out when we need it.
