ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Script (comics)

Okay, so you know how when you want to tell a story, you usually have to write it down with words? Well, when some people want to tell a story through pictures instead of words, they use something called a script.

A script is kind of like a map that tells the people drawing the pictures what pictures they need to draw, and what words need to go with each picture. It’s like a special plan for making a comic book.

For example, let’s say you want to make a comic book about a hero who saves the day. You would start by writing out a description of what happens in each picture. For the first picture, you might write “The hero stands tall on a rooftop, looking out over the city.” And for the second picture, you might write “Suddenly, the hero sees smoke rising from a building in the distance!”

You would also write down what the characters in the comic say to each other. So, in the first picture, maybe the hero says to themselves, “Time to get to work!” And in the second picture, maybe the hero says to someone else, “I have to help those people!”

Once you have all of these instructions written down in your script, the artists who will be drawing the comic know exactly what to draw and what words to put in the little bubbles next to each picture. And when they’re all done drawing and putting the words in, you have your very own comic book! Cool, huh?
