At some cultures, when a girl gets to a certain age, usually around 11-14, she is kept isolated from others. This is called seclusion of girls at puberty. This may include separate living quarters, not being allowed to go out very much, or having to stay with adults who are not their parents. This is done because in some cultures, people believe that a girl who is becoming a woman needs time to transition and become familiar with her body, and the customs and laws of the adults in her community. Additionally, some people believe that seclusion keeps girls safe from harassment, or being taken advantage of in any way by strangers.
