ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shaft mining

Shaft mining is when people dig really deep holes in the ground to get useful stuff like coal, metals, or minerals. Think of it like digging a really deep hole in the ground with a very big and powerful shovel.

First, people need to find where the useful stuff is hidden. They can use machines or their own hands to dig small holes in the ground to see if they found anything interesting. Once they find a good spot, they start digging a big hole by hand, which is called a shaft.

A shaft is like a tall, narrow tunnel that leads straight down into the ground. People use special equipment like drills and explosives to dig the shaft deeper and wider. This takes a lot of hard work and can be dangerous, so there are rules and safety measures to follow.

Once the shaft is big enough, they use elevators or hoists to bring up the useful stuff they found. This is usually done in big chunks called ores, which they can then process and refine to make things like jewelry, cars, or energy.

Shaft mining is important because it helps people get the things they need to live and work. It also provides jobs for many people who work in the mines, from miners to engineers to scientists who study the rocks and minerals. However, it can be hard work and sometimes dangerous, so it's important to be careful and follow the rules.
