ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shame

Did you ever do something you feel really bad about afterwards? Maybe you lied to your parents, or you broke a toy that wasn't yours. Even though you didn't get in trouble, you still felt really bad and didn't want anyone to know what you did. That feeling is called shame.

Shame is a feeling of embarrassment and guilt that happens when we do something we think is wrong or bad. It's like a little voice inside of us telling us that we messed up and we shouldn't have done what we did.

Sometimes, we feel ashamed because we feel like we let someone down or disappointed them. Other times, shame comes from feeling like we don't measure up to other people's expectations, or even our own.

When we feel shame, it can be really tough to talk about it or even acknowledge it to ourselves. But it's important to remember that everyone feels shame sometimes, and it doesn't mean we're bad people. It just means we're human, and we make mistakes.

The good news is that we can learn and grow from our mistakes, and we can use our experiences with shame to become better people. It can be hard work, but it's worth it to feel good about ourselves and the choices we make.
