ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Shinran

Shinran was a very special person who lived a long time ago in a faraway place called Japan. He was born about 800 years ago in a family that was part of a religious group called Buddhism. Buddhism is a kind of teaching that helps people live a good life by being kind, helpful, and understanding.

Shinran was very wise, and he wanted to help people understand that being good is not something we can do by ourselves. He believed that everyone is born with a special goodness inside, but we have a hard time seeing it because we get distracted by all kinds of things. We may worry about what other people think about us, or we may be too busy playing or focusing on other things.

Shinran said that we need help to see this goodness inside us. That's why he taught that we can rely on a special power that will help us be good. This power comes from the universe and is called Amida Buddha. Amida Buddha is like a big light that shines on us and helps us see the goodness inside ourselves.

Shinran's teachings became very popular because they offered people a way to find peace and happiness. He founded a special kind of Buddhism called Pure Land Buddhism, which is still practiced today in many parts of the world. In Pure Land Buddhism, we don't have to do anything special to be good, we just have to trust in Amida Buddha's power and let it guide us.

That is the story of Shinran! He was a very important person who wanted to help us all be good and happy.
