Singing sand

You know how when you go to the beach and you get sand on your feet? Sand is made up of tiny pieces of rocks and shells that are worn down by the waves in the ocean.

Well, sometimes when you step on the sand, it makes a sound! This is called singing sand. It sounds kind of like a low humming or a musical note.

Scientists aren't exactly sure why singing sand happens, but they think it has to do with the size and shape of the sand grains. When the sand grains are just the right size and shape, they can rub against each other and vibrate, making the singing sound.
