ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Skid marks

Okay kiddo, have you ever played with a toy car and make it go really fast? And then you try to stop it really quickly, but it keeps going and makes a big screechy sound on the ground? That screechy sound is kinda like what happens when a real car tries to stop really fast and it leaves behind what we call "skid marks."

Skid marks are like marks or trails left behind by a car when it tries to stop really quickly, and the tires slip and slide on the ground. Imagine if you were running and someone grabbed your feet, making you slide forward on the ground. That's kind of what happens to a car when it tries to stop very quickly. The tires lose their grip on the road and leave behind a mark on the ground that shows where the car slid.

These marks can be different colors, depending on the type of road surface and the type of tire on the car. Some skid marks are black or dark colored because they're made from rubber rubbing off the tire. Other skid marks might be lighter in color because they're made from dirt or other things on the road surface getting scraped up.

Skid marks can help police officers investigate car accidents because they can tell us how fast a car was going when it stopped, and how far it slid before coming to a complete stop. So, skid marks are kind of like clues left behind by a car when it tries to stop really quickly.
