Slash-and-burn agriculture

Slash-and-burn agriculture is a way of growing crops by cutting down trees, burning them, and using the ashes to fertilize the soil. It's called "slash-and-burn" because farmers slash the trees with sharp tools and then burn the vegetation. The ashes from the fire help add nutrients to the soil, which allows for crops to grow. Imagine you have a garden at home, but the soil doesn't have any food for your plants to grow. What do you do? You burn some wood, and the ashes will add nutrients to the soil, which will help your plants grow healthier and stronger! Farmers in some parts of the world clear land to grow crops this way because they don't have access to other farming methods like using tractors or fertilizers. The downside is that the land may eventually become depleted of nutrients, which can lead to problems with soil erosion and loss of biodiversity. It's important to be aware of the environmental impacts of slash-and-burn agriculture and to find sustainable ways to grow crops.
